Tuya Based Devices

Welcome to my list of Tuya based battery powered devices.

When I gave up on designing my own lighting controller (for the moment that is) I also looked around at what I could commandeer for use as a temperature sensor. As it turn out, most every "smart" temperature sensor uses a cheap temp / humidity combo sensor that is panned by the few people who have looked at its reliability. So I started looking for products based on the ESP8266 (to take advantage of Tasmota/ESPEasy/ESPurna/etc), was battery operated and that I could add a genuine DS18B20 onto. It turns out that there are several versions of door/window sensors that are battery operated and use the Tuya module that is much simpler to solder to than the QFN of the ESP8266. These complete assemblies run as low as $7.00, with free shipping and two AAA batteries - impossible to compete with even if you start with a D1 Mini.

When I settle on a wiring system and firmware load, I will add that here also.

Here are the modules, which will change as time goes on. Some have more extensive "documentation" than others, which merely means I've spent some quality time with these units.

NOTE:

    • When changing the firmware it is best to directly connect and use a serial uploader such as the bed of nails programmer I developed. One person's attempts to program them over the air using Tuya-OTA are documented at the Tasmota Template website. When I first tried programming these I thought the problem was Tuya-OTA and labeled it fragileware, but it is not its fault.

R5 and C4 form an RC for the EN pin of the module

The AUX processor is powered directly from the battery

A divider is used for the boost converter’s enable

AUX pin 3 to R13 + Enable + R1 to GND

R9 to Battery or R12 to GND appear to provide a strapping option to the AUX processor

R2 appears to be a bleed down between the boost output and ground

Resistor values:

R1 - 104 - 100KΩ

R2 - 101 - 100Ω

R3 - 102 - 1KΩ

R4 - 102 - 1KΩ

R5 - 103 - 10KΩ
